Votes at 16 timetable welcomed by Girlguiding Scotland
Girlguiding Scotland welcomes yesterday’s news (Monday 19 January 2015) that the timetable for a section 30 order allowing MSPs to legislate to lower the voting age in Scotland has been agreed.
Girlguiding Scotland champions youth engagement with the democratic process and has two representatives on the Scottish Youth Parliament, known as MSYPs.
The charity encouraged all young women to make their voice heard in the independence referendum, and in June 2014 co-hosted a debate with the Scottish Youth Parliament where young women could explore the issues further.
Denise King, Chief Executive of Girlguiding Scotland, said: “Girlguiding Scotland works hard to encourage our members to play a full and active role in their communities and in our democracy.
“Young women across the country got involved in the referendum debate with intelligence, passion and insight.
“Extending the vote to young people aged 16 and up for future Scottish elections is a great way to capitalise on this and make sure their voices are counted.”
