Go international

Being a member of Girlguiding Scotland could take you anywhere in the world! Helen, a Young Leader and member of The Senior Section, was given the opportunity to help lead her Guide unit on a trip to the NORD Jamboree in Norway. She shares her highlights and a few tips to inspire others to take on an international adventure.

1. So many badges, so little time

At the jamboree there were lots of badges available to be earned by taking part in exciting activities from hiking to escape room challenges. My favourite activity was going on an overnight hike through the beautiful mountains near the town of Bodø, but I also really liked getting to go sailing in an old fashioned sailboat. Remember to take some badges from home too – the badge swap was amazing and I collected loads of weird and wonderful new ones.

2. Learn incredible new skills

We went on an overnight hike and my survival skills were truly put to the test! We were only allowed to take what we could carry with us on the hike and had to build a makeshift shelter for warmth – I even learnt some knife whittling skills. I gave pioneering a go too – this is where you make structures using ropes, wood, knots and lashings. We made an archway out of logs and added a swing for fun!

3. Helen’s top travel tips

Learning a bit of the language of the country you’re heading to can be totally invaluable – teach your own unit and you’ll soon pick it up. I would also make sure you go to a jamboree with a passion to do all the activities because you really do get out what you put in.
