Girlguiding Scotland’s Growing Guiding Award

This award is for Girlguiding Scotland volunteers who have helped more girls and adults join or stay in guiding!

Helping more girls and adults from across Scotland to access the benefits of guiding is key to Girlguiding Scotland’s strategy. This award aims to recognise local efforts to encourage more girls and adults to join guiding or stay in guiding for longer. To be eligible for an award, a nominee must hold an active volunteer role within Scotland.

What actions do we want to recognise with this award?

  • Recruiting groups of girls or adults in innovative ways
  • Using flexible guiding to reach more girls in areas where there is a shortage of spaces (including online guiding)
  • Using flexible guiding to retain young leaders and young adults
  • Supporting adults to stay in guiding and develop new skills and/or take on new roles
  • Innovative events or activities that encourages transitions between the sections
  • Opening a unit in an area without guiding
  • Re-opening a unit in an area with long waiting lists
  • Running a holiday guiding programme (in person or virtually) to give more girls their first taste of guiding
  • Widening participation by reaching out to new communities or groups that are under-represented in guiding
  • Being a warm welcome champion – making sure that every volunteer gets a great guiding welcome, every time
  • Driving forward the use of data to make sure that growth is planned strategically
