Speak Out Champions – Carla’s story

Carla Gee, 16, is a young leader with the 3rd Bridge Of Allan Guides. On International Day of the Girl 2019 she shares with us what being a Speak Out Champion means to her.

I was already a member of the Speak Out forum on Facebook, so when I first heard about the idea of becoming a Champion I knew I would love to be involved. The amazing opportunities and articles that were being shared inspired me to apply. I have always been determined when it comes to standing up for what you believe in to make a positive change. I find it so empowering to be able to use your voice to make a real difference in real life situations, so when the role came up I had to apply!

It’s a real privilege to be involved in Girlguiding Scotland at such a high level. They are an organisation that I have been a member of for over 11 years and they have given me so many fabulous opportunities to grow as an individual. I’m honoured to be a Speak Out Champion, giving Girls across Scotland a voice and a chance to be heard. I have already learnt so much about how to create inspiring and important campaigns while making sure you are listening to the statistics and figures.

I’m really passionate about a couple of things. One being the environment, which is why I’m so happy that we are getting involved in Girlguiding’s #PlasticPromise campaign to tackle plastic pollution. I’m also really passionate about encouraging girls and young women into STEM subjects and careers. As someone who has always had a passion for logical solutions and wants to go onto to have a career in engineering, I feel it’s important to inspire girls to reach their full potential in these fields.

Already, I have gained and improved so many skills through Speak Out. I loved the public speaking workshops we took part in and they have improved my confidence in public speaking immensely. It has also improved my communication and team work skills. All these skills are things that I will take forward into my career and will ensure that our work as Speak Out Champions is beneficial.

The best thing so far has been attending the residentials. I’ve loved getting to know everybody else on the team and have made a whole new group of friends with something in common. I’ve enjoyed having this opportunity as it is very unique and valuable in so many ways. It has given me the chance to be fully involved in a totally different aspect of Girlguiding, something which I am very grateful for.

I’m looking forward to getting to know the group more, attending events and meeting influential people and decision makers. I feel like this will be when I will fully realise the impact of our work and get to see how change is made first hand. I’m also looking forward to deepening my understanding of campaigning and growing as an individual.

If anybody is swaying with the idea of applying to be a Speak Out Champion I would 100% say go for it! Don’t worry about the fact that you don’t know anyone, you will all be in the same boat and five minutes in it won’t even matter. The organisation of the team is amazing and we are constantly in contact despite being spread across the country. Be yourself in your application and truly highlight your passion for wanting to be in the role. If you feel it’s important to stand up for what you believe in and want to make a change…go for it!
