Boost your confidence this World Thinking Day

Travelling to Mexico was one of the best experiences of my life!

Going on an international adventure is an amazing way to connect with other members from all around the globe. Grace, a member of 1st North Berwick Senior Section shares her top reasons why a recent once-in-a-lifetime Mexico trip made a big impact and grew her confidence.

Travelling to Mexico for two weeks was one of the best experiences of my life and I think all members should take part in an international trip if they get the chance! It’s a great way to boost your self-esteem.

My group stayed at one of the five World Centres, our Cabaña. We met other girls from Mexico, Canada and the USA. Meeting so many new people can be a bit scary but here’s how my group got prepared and made the most of guiding connections around the world.

1. Before you go

I got chatting to other members in my county about fundraising ideas. Spreading the word was good for getting more people involved and ultimately raising more money. Holding a bake sale and taking part in a sponsored silence are just some of the great ways to get fundraising but you can find more inspiration here.

2. Culture swap

To introduce ourselves my group ran a Scotland-themed crafting session for locals where we made highland cows and thistles. We even hosted an international evening at our Cabaña. We stayed with girls from all over the world so this gave us an amazing opportunity to find out more about each other’s lives back home.

3. Knowing me, knowing you

At first I was a little nervous to travel so far from home but everyone on the trip became such good friends. One of my top tips for when you’re going on an international adventure is to learn some useful phrases before you go so you’re prepared. Luckily I had been studying Spanish which was a huge help when chatting to the locals.

4. Face your fears

My advice to anyone considering going on an international adventure would be to just go for it. Our trip to Mexico was life-changing – I feel more confident and less afraid to try new things and now I know I can go somewhere totally new and make friends. I’m already hoping to go back to Mexico as a volunteer as soon as I can.
