Girlguiding Scotland launch campaign to help refugees, and you can get involved!

Girlguiding Scotland is supporting Edinburgh Cares ‘Step in My Shoes’ campaign and want your help!

A group of Senior Section members from Glasgow working on their Queen’s Guide Award are leading the project. They were inspired by the Step in My Shoes campaign which aims to help refugees in Syria, Greece and Lebanon by providing a pair of comfortable shoes. After hearing about the difficult conditions which refugees face as they flee from war in their country, struggling to walk long distances to safety, the group were keen to provide practical help. Supporting the campaign will ensure refugees have comfortable dry shoes as they often they face walking long distances in unsuitable footwear.

Get involved

Girlguiding Scotland is asking members to consider donating a pair of shoes to the campaign. Edinburgh Cares are looking for unwanted and unneeded shoes which are comfortable and in good condition suitable either for children or adults.

A target has been set of 3000 pairs of shoes – this works out to be one pair from each unit in Scotland.

Each donation should be made of one pair of shoes with a pair of socks inside, with a personal message. Please see the resources below which includes a tag to use on each donation.

Resources you’ll need to get started

Download our template letter to give to parents and printable luggage tags to draw or write your message to attach to the shoes that contain a pair of socks inside. Please tie the luggage tag to each pair of shoes with an encouraging, welcoming message without any personal information.

Tag us on social media so we get to find out how many amazing guiding groups are taking part! We’d encourage you to use the hashtag, #stepinmyshoes, when posting about the campaign.

You could take a photo with all your shoes collected and share it, why not try making a piece of artwork with all the shoes before donating them (how about into a trefoil shape?)

Donating your shoes

The shoes will be kept in a storage unit in Edinburgh. Once you’ve gathered your shoes – we’d like you to drop them off in Edinburgh at one of our preferred drop-off days.
