HRH The Earl of Wessex joins Girlguiding Scotland members to celebrate the success of DofE Award

HRH The Earl of Wessex visited Netherurd, Girlguiding Scotland’s home from home in the Scottish Borders, to see how the The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) is helping girls and young women to grow in confidence and discover new skills.

HRH The Earl of Wessex visited Nertherurd as part of a tour celebrating the Diamond Anniversary of the DofE, which has helped to transform the lives of millions of young people in the UK and across the globe since it was founded in 1956.

More than 900 Girlguiding Scotland members have achieved their Bronze, Silver or Gold Award over the last decade thanks to a partnership between the two youth charities.

Lucy Buchanan, 20, from Beildside, achieved her Gold Award after working through a wide range of challenges from adventurous activity to volunteering as part of Girlguiding Scotland’s Senior Section for young women ages 14-25.  Lucy said:

“Girlguiding Scotland helped me to achieve this award through amazing experiences including trying adventurous activities like gorge walking and kayaking, having the chance to hike from the West to the East Coast of the Scotland and volunteering as a Leader with the 1st Cults Brownies.

“My personal highlight of working towards my Award was going away to a National Trust Trailblazer camp at Mar Lodge in Braemar to help with local conservation.  Deer fence removal’ and ‘footpath maintenance’ might not sound like the most exciting work but I had the most amazing week learning new skills and meeting new people from all over Europe.

“Achieving this Award helped me to become more independent. Before, I was scared to do anything without my friend by my side, but doing the DofE taught me how important and satisfying it is to take on new adventures as an individual. It helped me discover a whole new side to myself while making new friends and creating unforgettable memories.”

To celebrate its 60th year, the DofE has launched the DofE Diamond Challenge; a one-off initiative that allows people of all ages to take on a DofE inspired challenge and earn a limited-edition DofE Diamond Challenge pin. To find out more about The DofE Diamond Challenge and get involved visit:
