New to volunteering? We’ve got you covered!

Everyone was new to volunteering once upon a time. Help those who have just starting out on their volunteering journey realise how much fun they’ll have, and how supported they’ll be, by sharing these fun top tips on getting to grips with the world of Girlguiding.

1. Getting to know the girls

Don’t panic if you can’t remember every girl’s name when you first start volunteering – there are lots of fun ways to get to know everyone. You could get a beach ball, write different questions on it like ‘What’s your nickname?’ or ‘What’s your funniest memory?’, then sit in a circle and pass it to one another. 2. Overheard at Girlguiding

Do you know what kind of owl you’d like to be? Made your Promise yet? These are just some of the questions you might be asked when you start volunteering which can be confusing when you’re new. Don’t forget that your fellow volunteers will help you figure out what’s what and you’ll know the difference between a Sixer and a Seconder in no time!

3. Find your place

Are you a maths whizz? Do you thrive on organising exciting events? From helping out with accounts to organising the next action-packed camping trip for girls, make sure your volunteer team know where your skills lie so you can find the ideal role at your new unit and get the most out of your time.

4. Fit volunteering around your life

We know life can get busy and people’s personal circumstances can change. From childcare to work obligations, there are ways to make volunteering fit around your schedule. Don’t forget to let your volunteer team know your situation and together you’ll find a way to make it work.
