My year in three!

Being a member of Girlguiding Scotland means everything to me!

From our campaign to end period poverty in Scotland to our biggest ever TARTAN GIG, 2017 has been a great year and together we’ve achieved so much. We caught up with some of our members to find out about their top three highlights from the last 12 months. First up is young leader Katie – check out what she had to say.

1. Attending the Labour Party Conference and speaking with various politicians made me feel like I really had the chance to influence real change to improve the lives of girls. We discussed everything from mental health to gender stereotypes. It was one of the most exciting things I’ve done this year as a result of being a member.

2. Becoming part of the First Minister’s National Advisory Council on Women and Girls was the absolute icing on the cake of my 2017! The new group has been created to advise the Scottish Government on the action needed to tackle gender inequality, and I’m one of three young people who have been invited to sit on it. I even got to sit next to First Minister at the very first meeting!

3. It’s been impossible to choose just one last event for my final slot! Representing Girlguiding Scotland at Pride Glasgow and helping run a Superhero Science Camp for my Guides to get them more interested in STEM subjects were two of the best highlights.

I’ve so many amazing memories from these events and I really feel like I’m helping to change the world one step at a time. Being a member of Girlguiding Scotland means everything to me – it has given me so many incredible opportunities and truly made me into the person I am today. Since becoming an advocate, I’ve changed from a shy 15-year-old who wouldn’t speak up in class to the self-assured woman I am now and I’ve made life-long friends.

Now I’m looking forward to 2018 and I’m hoping Girlguiding Scotland grows more, for members to aim even higher and for our sisterhood to become stronger.
