Volunteers’ Week 2019: Inspire your girls to protect the planet
This #VolunteersWeek we’re celebrating how our amazing 12,000 volunteers can support girls and young women to make change.
By inspiring her unit to take an active interest in improving their local community, 3rd Alloway Guide leader Pam started her girls on a mission to help protect the planet. This World Environment Day she shares how easy it is to encourage your unit to do their bit to help save the world.
There’s a beautiful hill here in Alloway where people constantly leave their trash so armed with bibs, disposable gloves, litter pickers and bin bags we set to work. It was a beautiful evening here in Ayr and in just one hour the girls had collected an impressive 8 bags of litter!
After we finished the surrounding area looked spotless and four of our girls decided to make their Promise right there and then. The views from the top of the hill provided a stunning backdrop for the special occasion.
The clean-up was really easy to organise and I’d encourage all units to give it a go in their local community. It was such a rewarding experience. Here are my top tips for making it happen:
1. Reach out
We got in touch with our local council to let them know our plans and they very kindly supplied us with plenty of bin bags and litter pickers. They even made arrangements to pick up the rubbish from a designated point. Result!
2. Let’s keep Scotland beautiful
Keep Scotland Beautiful, the charity leading the way on improving Scotland’s environment, were also extremely helpful. They made sure we had plastic bibs and fun stickers on the day of the clean-up.
Feeling inspired? Check out the Keep Scotland Beautiful challenge badge today. It’s been designed to help your unit learn all about the environment and how to protect it.
3. Get all your girls involved
If you’re looking for an activity that girls of all ages, from different sections, can take part in then a clean-up effort is ideal. The more helping hands you can get on board the better and it’s a great opportunity to mix sections.
