Ready, set, get recognised for your volunteering!

The Saltire Awards are Scotland’s national scheme for celebrating young volunteers aged 11–25. They are supported by the Scottish Government and delivered locally through a network of Third Sector Interfaces (TSIs) and Volunteer Centres. Girlguiding Scotland volunteers age 13-25 can achieve Saltire Awards by simply tracking the time they spend volunteering.

Are you a Brownie or Guide helper, a young leader, a young external volunteer or an adult volunteer under 26? Get started on Saltire Awards now!

Speak to your local TSI or Volunteer Centre to find out more about Saltire Awards! They can give you advice and let you know if they have any plans for wider recognition or projects you can get involved in in your area.

How it works

Whether you’re Brownie or Guide helper, a young leader, a young external volunteer or an adult volunteer under 26, Saltire Awards can reward you for hours spent volunteering with Girlguiding Scotland.

You can reach different levels of Saltire Awards depending on the time you spend volunteering, starting at just 10 hours and going up all the way to 500 hours!

To gain an award, you just need to log the hours you volunteer and have someone else confirm you’ve completed those hours. (This could be a unit leader for example).

So what are you waiting for? Get signed up!

To record your own hours, simply go to the Saltire Awards website and sign up for a ‘My Saltire’ account.

Top tip: When signing up, make sure to provide an email that you or your parents check regularly.

Once registered, you can add Girlguiding as a volunteering role.

To do this, you need to enter a ‘volunteer manager’ in your account. This can be a unit leader or someone else in your unit who can confirm the hours you have done. Make sure to speak to them before registering and ask them for an email address you can enter when registering – make sure to double check the spelling.

You can now log the hours you have volunteered in the last 2 years.

Once you have logged 10, 25, 50, 100, 200 or 500 hours you can claim certificates in the ‘My Awards’ section. When you claim these awards, your volunteer manager is sent an email to confirm this. When they’ve done this you can download your certificate – well done!

Top tip: Once you’ve claimed an award, remind the person you added as a volunteer manager to confirm the award.

Have you received a Saltire Award for volunteering with us already? Why not share a photo of yourself with your certificate and tag @GirlguidingScot or send it to growth@girlguiding-scot.org.uk? We’d love to share it!

I’m a leader, how can I support a young person to get a Saltire Award?

Do you have Brownie or Guide helpers, young leaders, Duke of Edinburgh volunteers or adult volunteers under 26 in your unit and you’d like to support them to gain Saltire Awards?

Here’s how you can help:

  1. Young people recording their own awards: young volunteers can sign up with Saltire Awards and be in charge of their own hours. When they do so, they may ask you if they can add your email address as a ‘volunteer manager’. When they claim an award you will automatically receive an email asking to confirm their hours – double check everything is right and confirm and the volunteer will be able to download a certificate from their account.
  2. Signing up as a group admin: if you have a number of volunteers eligible for Saltire Awards, it might make sense to sign up as a ‘Group Admin’. Once you’ve done this, it means you can request awards on behalf of your volunteers and they don’t have to log their own hours (they still can if they like, though).

Challenge Awards: If you are signed up as a group admin, you can also sign your entire Guides or Rangers unit up for a Saltire Challenge Award. These are for cheering on group volunteering, for example if your unit members take part in fundraising or a wider community event to either help others or raise money. Hours spent on volunteering for a Challenge award can’t be counted to the total of other Saltire Awards.

Summit Awards: Do you have a young volunteer who goes above and beyond in supporting your girls? You can nominate volunteers who have logged over 200 hours for a prestigious Summit Award. Many areas highlight Summit Award recipients with press features or even invite them to a local ceremony! Contact your local TSI or volunteer centre to find out how to nominate someone for a Summit award.

Why Saltire Awards?

We are great at celebrating our girls’ and volunteers’ achievements internally but external schemes like Saltire Awards are an often undiscovered way to cheer on our volunteers – and they bring their own unique benefits!

They can:

  • Help our young volunteers in their future careers. Saltire Awards are nationally recognised by universities and employers and make a great addition to CVs, job interviews and personal statements.
  • Show our young volunteers how proud we are of them and that their hard work matters outside of guiding as much as within.
  • Help us shout about the difference guiding is making in our wider communities.
  • Show how committed our volunteers are.
  • Attract more young volunteers: Young people who are working towards their Saltire Awards goals through other organisation might feel inspired to get involved with guiding if they see their peers and friends achieve these awards.

Share your story

We’d love to hear about the difference Saltire Awards are making to our volunteers. No matter how small or big – we want to share your story with others! Email us at growth@girlguiding-scot.org.uk, we’d love to hear from you.
