Fife Brownie Leader walks 300 km for mental health charity

A Brownie Leader from Fife is planning to walk 300 km of the Pilgrim’s Way in Spain to raise funds for a cause close to her heart.

Nikki Bryne, Leader of the 6th Rosyth Brownie Unit, will spend three weeks navigating the ancient pilgrimage route from Leon to Santiago to raise vital funds for a local charity which helps people who self harm.

Nikki, who credits both guiding and the Fife Self Harm Project in helping with her recovery, says:

“I’ve never been into hiking so I’m not sure what I have got myself into planning a 300km trek, but I feel this challenge reflects my personal journey.

“Throughout my recovery I kept putting one foot in front of the other with the support of the project, my family and friends around me.

“I also received amazing support from guiding members around me, including my Commissioners and other Leaders. Guiding feels like an integral part of who I am and it has been a part of my recovery journey.

“I struggled with self-harm issues from a young age. It was a really tough period in my life and if I hadn’t got help I don’t think I would be here today.

“Penumbra’s Self-Harm Project in Fife supported me from the beginning and now I want to give something back.

“I’ve already started to collect donations and I have set myself a target of £3000, but any money I can collect will go a long way to helping people in Fife who are struggling with their mental health.”

The money raised will go to the Fife Self Harm Project, which provides drop ins, coffee mornings and one-to-one sessions for people who want support for self harm, as well as working throughout Fife to raise awareness of mental health issues.

Over the past five years Nikki has been an active campaigner on mental health issues and sits on the Scottish Government’s Suicide Prevention Strategy Implementation and Monitoring Group. Nikki also uses her experiences to provide advice and support as a part of the Penumbra self harm services in Fife and Edinburgh.
