Coping with stress – you’re not alone

We’re taking a look at how the pressures of everyday life can be tough to deal with. Stress can seriously affect your mental health and according to Girlguiding’s Girls’ Attitude Survey 74% of girls aged 11-16 often feel stressed out about school, college or work. Here are some coping tips for when you feel under pressure.

1. Reach out

It’s OK to ask for help when you’re finding it hard to cope. Don’t be afraid to talk to someone you trust about what’s bothering you like your unit leader, a close friend, a family member or even a teacher. You can also reach out to a mental health charity when you feel anxious and need support and advice like Childline, Breathing Space or the Samaritans.

2. Write it down

If you don’t feel comfortable reaching out to anyone just yet then writing everything down that’s upsetting you can help you deal with stress. And if you’re finding it hard to keep on top of everything, like homework, making helpful to-do lists are a great way of keeping track of what needs to be done right away and what can wait.

3. Unwind with some me time

We know life can get really busy but it’s so important to take some time out for yourself to recharge your batteries. From logging off social media for a few hours and getting lost in a good book to watching your favourite movie, make sure you always schedule in some time to relax and unwind.

4. Just breathe

A great way to chill out when you feel like everything is getting on top of you is by doing some relaxing yoga and breathing exercises. This has been proven to ease anxiety and calm us down when we feel really stressed out – head over to our Pinterest for more information and top tips.

5. De-stress with your unit

We aim to give girls a space where they can de-stress, relax and feel good about themselves by spending time with their friends as well as taking part in activities like crafting, games, meditation and exploring the great outdoors together.
