What is Lone Guiding?
The aim of Lone Guiding is to allow girls and young women anywhere the chance to be part of Guiding, even if they can’t attend a weekly meeting. Lone Guiding is for those who can’t attend regular meetings maybe due to where they live, other commitments or a disability. Lones are linked with a Guider and keep in touch via email, text, phone, newsletter and good old fashioned post! The great thing about Lone Guiding is that, no matter how busy you are, it can be done throughout the year when you have spare time.
Why be a Lone?
Some of the many reasons why a girl may become involved in Lone Guiding are that she:
- has no Unit for her age group where she lives.
- has another commitment/activity on the night the local Unit meets
- has an illness or disability which prevents her attending a regular Unit.
- attends a boarding school.
- Has family commitments / lack of transport / too much homework
How does it actually work?
Each girl is allocated to a Guider who will correspond with her, usually monthly. The Guider will suggest activities to try, offer help and advice on badges, and generally encourage the Lone to achieve as much as she can. - Lones also receive a regular newsletter from other girls, as well as craft ideas and information.
- In addition to this, every Lone has the opportunity to attend a Lones; "Get-Together" each year.
- The Scottish Lones Adviser is responsible for overseeing the group and offering support to both the Guiders and the girls involved.

Who can be a Lone?
- Lone Guiding is for anyone who is unable to attend a local Unit for whatever reason.
- The Lone scheme is open to anyone who is aged from 5 to 65 years of age.
- Rainbows (5-7 yrs). Brownies (7-10yrs). Guides (10-14yrs). Senior Section (14-26 yrs). Adult Leaders (18-65 yrs). There is also a Lone Trefoil Guild for adults who want to support Guiding in their locality or just keep in touch.
What do Lones do?
As well as doing all the normal badges, current Lones have completed their Baden Powell Challenge, participated in the International GOLD scheme visiting places like Thailand and Poland, and gained their Queen’s Guide Award as well as attending the annual Lones’ residential. You will also receive a newsletter written by other girls, as well as craft and activity ideas. ![]()

One year in the life of a Lone

Jan
Managed to complete some of the crafts in the Newsletter before we went back to school. I fancy trying 'Go For It' Parties this year.
Feb
Invited my two best friends for a Chinese meal - I found out about Chinese New Year and made a Chinese dragon - I sent a picture of it to my Guider.
Mar
Organised a pyjama party to help me complete my 'Go For It' Parties, we had great fun and a brill midnight feast. Sarah now thinks she'd like to be a Lone too so I'll ask my Guider about this next time I e-mail.
Jun
I've been invited to join in at a County Camp next month - there will be lots of other Units going and new activities to try. Sarah is coming too.
Aug
Camp was very wet, but we still managed to fit in lots of activities. We got on really well as a Patrol, and our Guider managed to stay overnight. We did a night hike and the two new girls made their Promise under the stars!
Oct
We all had to send an idea for the Christmas Newsletter. I sent instructions on how to make a soap swan and I sent some photos of Camp, so we might even feature in the next Newsletter.
Dec
Yipee - the Unit is re-opening in the village! I'll miss being a Lone - it helped me keep on Guiding when there was no way I could get to a Unit. Thanks Lones, and keep up the good work!
