Why we’re empowering girls to take the lead

Engender’s Sex and Power in Scotland report has shown just 27% of top leadership positions in Scotland are filled by women.

Read out full response to find out why we’re calling for action to improve gender equality and empower girls and young women to take the lead.

We were disappointed to read just 27% of top leadership positions in Scotland across politics, business, the public sector, media, culture, and sport are filled by women.  We believe a lack of women in top leadership positions doesn’t just mean women are under-represented in vital areas of public life and decision-making but has a knock-on effect on the next generation too.

Girlguiding’s Girls’ Attitude Survey – which explores the views and experiences of girls age 7-21 across the UK – show a sharp drop in confidence among girls as they prepare to enter the world of work. While 86% of girls age 7 to 10 agree that they have the same chance of succeeding in their career as boys this figure drops to just 35% for girls age 17-21.

It’s clear that too many young women are embarking on their careers already feeling like they have less chance of succeeding simply because of their gender. We’re working to change this view and raise aspirations, by giving girls across Scotland a safe space to grow in confidence and discover their full potential.

We’re working to change this view and raise aspirations, by giving girls across Scotland a safe space to grow in confidence and discover their full potential. Our recent WOWwoman campaign empowered thousands of girls across Scotland to celebrate female role models and discover their own leadership potential while our ongoing Action for Change project is training girls to be advocates in their communities and beyond on the issues that matter most to them.

And our fun and varied programme for girls age 5 to 25 offers 50,000 girls across Scotland the chance to discover their potential and take the lead – offering everything from outdoor adventure to social action, campaigning to international travel.

We’re committed to working towards a brighter future where all girls and young women have the confidence to aim high and take the lead.
