Scottish swimmer Corrie Scott wows the 1st Stonehouse Guides!
When the Leaders of the 1st Stonehouse Guides in South Lanarkshire, Lauren and Gillian, found out about our WOWwoman campaign last year they knew they wanted to get involved.
The campaign proved to be a great conversation starter at our unit meetings. Our girls are very energetic and two of our members, Cerys and Claire, are club swimmers so they chose Scottish swimmer and Commonwealth bronze medallist, Corrie Scott, to be our WOWwoman.
As Corrie is from our County originally I decided to reach out to her on Twitter and see if she would be up for coming along and speaking to the girls. We were so excited when she replied and agreed to drop by for a visit!
When the girls found out she was coming they worked really hard to come up with an endless list of questions and created a WOWwoman wall in our hall for the athlete.
On the night Corrie told the girls all about her amazing swimming career so far and how she’s determined to secure a gold medal one day. The Guides gasped when they found out she trains up to ten times a week on top of studying Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh and while completing a pharmacology placement.
We have six members completing their Baden Powell Challenge so it was fantastic when Corrie spoke to the Guides about their personal fitness goals. Then the girls found she likes motivational quotes so they came up with their own and shared them with her.
One of our members, Katy, said:
“Our WOWwoman, Corrie, visiting was really good. She didn’t just talk about swimming – I don’t swim and it was still really inspirational.”
Corrie coming by to speak has had a massive impact. The Guides and their parents are still talking about our VIP visit and how it has boosted their confidence and encouraged them to speak up more. It has also raised the profile of the unit and helped highlight the great work we do here.
