International Trips
International opportunities allow girls to further develop their knowledge and understanding of themselves and of Girlguiding. Travellers go not only on a physical journey but also on an educational journey of self-discovery. They become more independent, learn about teamwork, using their initiative and most importantly travelling problem solving. They also develops an appreciation and respect for the similarities and differences in other cultures.
A Scottish training team went to Ghanato train adults whilst another team was selected to help local Guides and villagers construct a community bakery in the remote village of Shia, deep in the hills, which mark Ghanas border with Togo. They stayed in the village for three weeks, and worked closely with the villagers in the planning and
construction of a bake house. The team from Scotland also had the opportunity to meet with the forty strong Ghanaian Guide Unit, and exchange traditional songs and dances. By the time they left, the girls were proudly wearing the Brownie and Guide uniforms which had been donated to the project. It was a great success.
"The time I spent in Ghana gave me the opportunity to witness the positive effects that Guiding can have on young women in a Third World country, and made me aware of how much we can learn from the Ghanaians optimistic outlook on life. The experience also allowed me to develop invaluable personal skills, and the crosscultural relationships formed will ensure that the project continues to benefit young women from both nations in the future."
