Hiking
The Great Scottish Walk is held every June in Edinburgh. The day itself was lovely and sunny which really helped with the carnival atmosphere and there was plenty to keep the girls interested as they were walking - the girls especially liked the free pizza and the thought of receiving their medals at the end of the twelve miles! There were walkers from all over
Scotland and further a field.
Hiking is an aerobic exercise and gets the heart beating faster to transport blood from the lungs to the muscles and so the heart and lungs grow more efficient. Regular hiking is good psychologically too. It can give a general sense of well being, it can be relaxing, and
relieve anxiety. Planning and participating on an expedition teaches the girls to be aware of strengths and weaknesses of the team. They also have to develop skills in planning, observation, map memory, team management, leadership, and risk assessment.
"By doing the expedition part of the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award; I had one of the best experiences of my life. I never thought I could do it. It goes to show that you never know what you are capable of until you give it a try. I am definitely more confident and independent since this experience. I would recommend it to anyone who is full of fun, likes adventure and is not afraid to try something different."
Michelle aged 16, Senior Section Ranger from Moray
"I really enjoyed the Great Scottish Walk because we could take our time and I could walk and chat with my friends but the best part was it was all for charity. I was surprised at how many people were taking part in the walk and how many were from different countries. Im looking forward to going back and doing it all again."
