Global Experiences

Iceland contd...

On the Monday we took the six-hour coastal route to the campsite, pitched our tents and settled in. The following day, while waiting for other campers to arrive, we treated ourselves to a shower (the toilets were an actual building, with hot and cold running water - how un-guide like!). That evening, we had the opening ceremony when we had to dress one of our patrol in a 'supernatural' outfit. Alison was our lucky mascot, and was dressed as the Loch Ness Monster! The rest of the week we took part in a variety of different activities such as pioneering, canoeing, swimming and other patrol tasks.

In the evenings, we visited other sites and spoke to people from across the world - Americans, Austrians, Belgians, Icelandics, Germans, as well as those closer to home, English and Welsh. On the Saturday we got to show off Scotland, as we sang and danced on the main stage, made a display, and gave away samples of shortbread and the like. For our efforts we got our picture in the daily camp newspaper! That night we had fireworks. It was quite surreal, because it felt like it was the middle of the day since it does not get dark in Iceland, but fitted right in with the theme of the camp, supernatural!.

The camp closed on the Tuesday, but we stayed an extra night and took the longer route through the mountains back to Reykjavik the next day and saw the breathtaking scenery Iceland is rightly famous for.

That night we had a pizza party with the groups also staying there. The next morning was a very early start, as we were getting the first flight out. It was really hard to say goodbye at Glasgow, as none of us wanted to end our holiday or our time together. It is amazing how close a group can grow in 12 days. We had an amazing time, and I am so glad I had the chance to experience everything. I would like to thanks all those that made it possible for me to go."
