International Day of the Girl 2019

Every day at Girlguiding Scotland is a celebration of girls and young women. Today, the world joins us as we come together to mark International Day of the Girl on the theme of GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable.

Since 2012, October 11 has been dedicated to highlighting the achievements of girls and young women and the challenges girls around the world are up against. We’re celebrating International Day of the Girl with a blog from our very own Speak Out Champions! Find out what Speak Out means to them and why they are ‘unscripted’ and ‘unstoppable’.

Grace McCabe, 16, is a Speak Out Champion and a member of the 1st Strathaven Rangers

As a Speak Out Champion I’ve been working hard with the other girls to take action on the issues that matter to girls and young women and how we can ensure our future is gender equal.

I applied to be a speak out champion in October 2018 because I’m so passionate about the empowerment of girls and young women worldwide and being in a group to do just this sounded amazing.

Being directly involved in creating Girlguiding Scotland campaigns is incredible. You get to help make the change that you want to see in the world. I want to change the way that girls are viewed in sport. Every girl has a place on the start line and every girl deserves respect whilst doing so. After the first Speak Out training weekend, my confidence has massively improved as I felt like my ideas were listened to and my opinion was valued.

The best thing about being a Speak Out Champion is being in a panel with like-minded girls from all around the country. We get along like a house on fire and we can do incredible things together.

I can’t wait to see what we create together in the long run. If you’re thinking of applying to Speak Out – just go for it! Girls like you will change the world!
