Western Isles

Introduction

Failte Gu Eileanan an iar - Welcome to the Western Isles

The Western Isles is the heartland of the Gaelic language and is a small group of Islands lying off the North-West Coast of Scotland. Our County Commissioner is Marlyn Graham.

About Us

Rainbows and Brownie

KayakingOur Islands consist of Lewis & Harris (one long Island) then going south North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay (these are accessed by ferry about an hour's journey from Leverburgh in south Harris or plane half an hour from Stornoway in Lewis). The South Islands of N Uist, Benbecula and S Uist and Eriskay are now joined by causeways (the last one South Uist to Eriskay completed in 2001). From Eriskay there is a 40 minute ferry journey to Barra, the southernmost Island of our County. The Islands are beautiful with white sandy beaches, lochs, and moorland, all ideal for Outdoor Activities. There are Outdoor Centres in Lewis & Harris and in North Uist.

At present we have Units from Barvas in the North to Daliburgh in the South and a Unit of Brownies in Bernera on the West Coast of Lewis. We are also hoping to open Units in Barra and Eriskay, subject to getting adult Leaders. Apart from Stornoway all our Units (Groups) are several miles apart, some as much as 50 miles.

We are looking for...

Brownies playing blindfoldLeaders in all Sections, in all Districts - It is not widely known, but Leaders can now do Job-Share which means that if someone would like to come forward, but thinks they won't be suitable because they cannot be there every week, they can now share the Leadership with another person or persons.

Archivist for Lewis & Harris - We have a LOT of old photographs, slides, printed material, etc. needing catalogued. This is ideal for someone who has a past Guiding knowledge, particularly local (although not necessary) and can store about 4 or 5 Archive Boxes. Materials (File Folders, etc.) will be supplied if needed.
