Midlothian

Introduction

Welcome to Girlguiding Midlothian's webpage. Our county may be one of the smallest but we make up for it in energy and activities! We were the first Girlguiding County in Scotland to appoint a Science Adviser, and our Trefoil Guild swam the channel (albeit in stages at the local swimming pool!

Our County Diary boasts a wide range of training and activity opportunities for our Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section, leaders and Trefoil Guild members. We also contribute to our local community in lots of different ways.

We offer lots of opportunities for getting involved, whatever your age - why not join us? Contact us to find out more - we'd love to hear from you!

About Us

The Big Gathering event at Vogrie

Midlothian is situated just south of Edinburgh and has both rural and urban areas, with our main towns being Bonnyrigg, Dalkeith, Newtongrange and Penicuik.

The Brownie House transformed into Hogwarts Great HallWe are lucky to have a range of facilities that we can make use of, from country parks to the artificial ski slope at Hillend, the Scottish Mining Museum to the famous Rosslyn Chapel.

One facility we are very proud of is our own Brownie House and campsite located in the grounds of Vogrie Country Park near Gorebridge. The Brownie House is a converted Victorian stable block which has all mod-cons, including disabled access, and accommodates 30 people. The adjacent campsite is fully equipped for up to 30 campers, with indoor showers and toilets and a permanent shelter on site.

For further information about the facilities or to make a booking, visit www.vogrie-brownies.co.uk

People of all ages! We have a range of volunteering opportunities - from direct opportunities with the girls such as helping at weekly meetings or helping at one-off events, to opportunities 'behind the scenes' with overseeing gift aid forms, the cleaning and maintenance of camp equipment or photocopying and stuffing envelopes. And you don't have to have been in Guiding before! Our Rainbow, Brownie and Guide sections all require extra adult help. Discover how much fun you can have and how you can help by contacting us.

Quote for one of our members:
Senior Section lend a hand with nail design"My daughter's Rainbow unit needed some extra help for an outing they had organised. By helping on this occasion I was able to get involved at some of the unit meetings and really enjoyed myself. I have now worked through the Adult Leadership Qualification and am now a warranted Guider. I've made great new friends and I love the opportunities Girlguiding is providing for me with."

Dawn, a parent and now a Rainbow Guider.

Ambassadors

the local Provost and Carolyn Spray from BBC's Beechgrove Garden were invested at the 2006 Annual Event

Our ambassadors are

•  Rhona Brankin, MSP
•  Sam Campbell, Midlothian Provost
•  Jeremy Purvis, MSP
•  Carolyn Spray, Beechgrove Garden presenter and Director of Pentland Plants

They have all been inducted at our Annual Event. Penicuik Guides with one of our ambassadors, Jeremy Purvis MSPBoth Rhona and Carolyn have fond memories of their involvement in Guiding when younger and recognise that it has moved with the times to allow young people today to get just as much out of it. Jeremy and Provost Campbell are both impressed at the ways in which guiding is active in the local community and the modern face it has.
