Nicola Sturgeon

Nicola Sturgeon - MSP

Nicola is an MSP and is Deputy Party Leader of the Scottish National Party. Born in Irvine, she was a Brownie in Dreghorn, North Ayrshire.

"If you believe in something, do it!"

Scotland and being Scottish...

Which is your favourite Scottish city and what part of it do you love the most?

I love Glasgow, not just because it is my home and I represent it in Parliament. It is a wonderfully diverse city - both in its culture and physical surroundings - and, despite its hard edges, one of the friendliest places in the world.

What is your proudest moment - being a Scot?

When, after 300 years, the Scottish Parliament was reconvened in 1999.

What is your favourite piece of Scottish music and what is the ideal location to hear it in?

Flower of Scotland. Anywhere in a big crowd - it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

Career…

What would you most like to be professionally remembered for?

Fighting for Scotland's interests and being one of the politicians who helped lead the nation to Independence.

If you believe in something, do it!

The state of the NHS. The staff work so hard so it's not their fault, but too many patients don't get the service they deserve.

What advice would you give to a young women thinking about going into politics?

If you believe in something, do it!

Guiding…

What games did you play at Brownies and which one was your favourite?

I loved it when we played Rounders outside.

Loyalty to friends.

I think it's hugely important for young people to learn about the world they live in and the many different cultures that make it what it is.

What values did you learn in Guiding that remains useful to you today?

Loyalty to friends.

What is your favourite Guiding memory?

Taking part in a Remembrance Day Parade.

Being a woman…

If you could change one thing for women in the world, what would it be?

I'd lift the glass ceiling completely. It's getting higher but its still there.

What do you believe is the most important thing a young woman should know about her life?

That anything's possible and you don't have to make impossible choices between being successful in a career and having kids. We have the right to do both.

If you could hold a dinner party with five female politicians who would they be?

Winnie Ewing, Margaret Thatcher, Barbara Castle, Benazir Bhutto, Wendy Alexander. It would be stimulating and, no doubt, explosive.

Do you think you bring a different perspective as a female politician?

Yes. Women see the world slightly differently and it's important to have that perspective in politics.

What's important to her...

If you had to choose a piece of prose, poem or song that represents you or how you try to live your life - what would it be?

The following part of 'To a Mouse' by Robert Burns:

O, wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as others see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us
An' foolish notion:
What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us,
And ev'n Devotion!

Modern Translation:
O would some Power the gift to give us
To see ourselves as others see us!
It would from many a blunder free us,
And foolish notion:
What airs in dress and gait would leave us,
And even devotion!

How would your friends describe you in three words?

I hope…loyal, sincere and good fun.

What is your favourite book?

Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon because it is such a powerful portrayal of Scotland and Scottish values.
