Carol Smillie

Carol Smillie - TV Presenter

Carol presents many popular TV programmes & is one of the most popular faces on UK television. She is from Glasgow and was once a Brownie.

"As long as you treat others the way you would like to be treated, and try your best then you'll get through life ok."

On being Scottish...

If you were going to paint a building in Scotland what would it be of and in which season?

Glasgow School of Art in the Snow.

Which famous Scot do you admire and respect?

I really like the actor Ken Stott. He is hugely talented and yet seems to avoid the media nonsense. I could watch him for hours.

Career…

Which were your top two programmes you enjoyed working on the most?

Definitely Changing Rooms, It was a phenomenon in TV terms. I loved the crew and the laughs, to be involved in a show like that was a sheer privilege…. And A Brush with Fame has been brilliant.

I started out life as a struggling artist, so this feels right for me. It's great to work on a show with so much talent around, and I've learned loads too!

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?

Appearing on ' This is your Life' and being invited to both Downing St and Buckingham Palace.

What is the best and worst part of what you do?

The best bits are the power to bring charities into the spotlight, the money, the perks and the positive attitude people have towards you. The worst bits are the media interest in anything that's private, the unkind comments your kids might hear in the playground, and jealousy.

Guiding…

Which was the interest badge you were most proud of getting?

It was so long ago, It’s hard to remember any particular badges. I’m sure there was one involving camping outdoors though, and that was a minor miracle that I got that one!

Being a woman…

You've written the "Working Mums Handbook" - what was the most important lesson you learned about being a busy working Mum?

Try to somehow to make time for yourself, otherwise you'll go mad! As I said in the introduction, there is no such thing as wonderwoman, so stop trying to be all things to all people.

What values do you try to instil in your daughters to help them become happy and confident young women?

As long as you treat others the way you would like to be treated, and try your best then you'll get through life ok.

What's important to her...

If you won a million pounds to give a charity of your choice, which one would it be?

The Variety Club, because they try so hard to improve the lives of so many disadvantaged kids, and Yorkhill Childrens Hospital. I had all my kids at the neighbouring Maternity unit and consider myself one of the lucky ones. They perform miracles every day.

What makes Carol Smillie smile?!

The wee notes I still get from my kids, telling me they love me to 'peesis'
