Alison Sheppard MBE - Swimmer

Alison is a four time Swimming Olympian & Commonwealth gold medallist. She was brought up in Glasgow and was a Brownie.

Who do you think is a great ambassador for Scottish sport?

A great ambassador for Scottish Sport is any athlete who is dedicated and committed to their sport. Sport isn't easy and anyone who perseveres through adversity shows great strength of character.


Career…


What is your greatest achievement?

Winning gold for Scotland at 2002 Commonwealth Games, being the first female swimmer to compete in 5 consecutive Olympics, and lastly being awarded an MBE in 2003.


What is the best advice you have been given on how to improve in your sport?

Enjoy what you do!



What has being a swimmer given you that you wouldn't have had the chance to do otherwise?


I wouldn't have seen so much of the world or met my husband!


What ambition do you still want to fulfil?

I still long to win an Olympic medal.


What is the moment you strive for that makes all the hard work worth while?

Every swimmer strives for the perfect race, when it all seems effortless and then you race a fast time.


If you could have just one perfect race - which one would it be?

The 2002 Commonwealth final when I had the support of all the home fans and it felt easy. I knew deep down before the race that I would win. The elation of winning and standing on the podium was something I shall never forget.



Being a woman…


What are the benefits of swimming for a young girl or woman? In what ways has it enhanced yours?

Swimming helps you become mentally tough and teaches time management skills.


What's important to her...


If you could win a million pounds for a charity of your choice - which one would it be?

Cancer charities since my family has been affected by cancer.


If you could live in the household of any person who ever lived - who would it be?

Muhammad Ali since he stood up for his beliefs, he could also teach me to box properly! I was using boxing as part of my training regime.
