Shirley is a Sailing Olympic Gold medalist and was awarded an OBE in 2004. She grew up in Menstrie, Clackmannanshire where she was a Brownie and Guide.

"…Work towards a goal which is a good life lesson and very rewarding."

Scotland and being Scottish...

Where is the most beautiful place in Scotland and secondly, the rest of the world to sail in?

Arisaig - the West Coast of Scotland and the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean.

What Scottish luxury item would you take with you on a long sailing trip if you could?

Tunnocks Caramel Wafers!

What is your favourite Scottish restaurant or café and what do you order?

Nardinis in Largs - Fish and Chips and ice cream.

Career…

A lot of people think that sailing is just a sport available to a privileged few. Is this still true and what advice would you give to young people who would love to try it?

More and more people "pay as you go sail" - it's much more accessible now. I hope one day like in France it's on the National Curriculum.

What is your proudest moment in sailing?

Winning gold in Sydney I had tried for a very long time.

Is there a single moment or experience in sailing that makes all your hard work and sacrifices worthwhile?

Standing on the podium hearing the National Anthem. Also when you come home to friends and family.

Guiding…

Would you encourage your daughters to join Guiding?

Yes, I would. I made a lot of friends and we did a lot of things I wouldn't have done otherwise. Also it encourages you to work towards a goal which is a good life lesson and very rewarding.

What was your greatest challenge in Guiding?

Knitting, I used to have to get my Mum to do most of it!

What is your favourite memory of Guiding?

Singing and playing games.

Being a woman…

What characteristics or qualities does a professional sportswoman need to have in order to succeed?

Did you always have these or have your learned them? Tenacity, hard working, focused, never settling for second best calm under pressure. Some, the last one I've only really had in the last few years.

What's important to her...

If you could choose a song that would be the theme tune of your life - what would it be?

M People - What Have You Done Today to Make You Feel Proud?

If you had a million pounds to give away to a charity or non-profit organisation - which would it be?

Cancer Research, too many people die young.

If you hadn't been a sailor what would you have done?

I've always loved the outside and sport so would have loved to work in a national park or looking after a coastal area.

What is your most precious possession?

Apart from my medals, pictures of growing up that jog the memory of good times.
