Heather Reid

Heather Reid - Weather Presenter & Meteorologist

Heather Reid presents the nightly forecast on BBC Scotland's Reporting Scotland news programme. She lives in Paisley, Renfrewshire.

"In today's society I think knowing how to work with others is very important."

On being Scottish...

What is your favourite part of the Glasgow Science Centre?

I'm a big fan of the 3rd Floor - especially all the renewable energy type exhibits - there's an important message there.....

If you could describe the personality of the Scots - as a weather report - what would it be?

A lovely big warm front!

Which is the best festival you have been to in Scotland?

Orkney Science Festival. I'd never been to Orkney before - it's a beautiful place with amazing scenery, warm, friendly people and good restaurants!

Which is your favourite mountain in Scotland to climb - why is it so special?

The Cobbler - it was one of the first dates with my now husband.

Career…

What part of your job or day do you most enjoy?

I really enjoy analysing the weather charts and deciding how best to communicate the message, especially when the weather is severe.

What do you think is the most frustrating misconception about weather presenters?

That we don't do any of the scientific work and just read a script - I don't have an autocue. I just make it up as I go along!

Guiding…

Which one of the "Essentials of Guiding" do you think is absolutely crucial quality for girls and young women today to have?

Socially the girls learn about: making group decisions, working with and having consideration for others. In today's society I think knowing how to work with others is very important.

Being a woman…

Which female scientist do you admire?

Professor Susan Greenfield CBE - advisor to the Social Issues Research Centre - she has excellent communication skills and makes a complicated subject (the brain!) understandable.

What's important to her...

As a cricket lover, if you could wake up tomorrow and be a world class cricketer - who would you like to play on your team?

Ian Botham, Imran Khan, David Gower and Shane Warne - two great all-rounders, a beautiful batsman and the best bowler in the world, and they're all fairly attractive into the bargain!

If you could climb any mountain in the world with anyone in the world - which mountain would you choose and who would be your companion?

I still have to do Tower Ridge on Ben Nevis with my husband - maybe next summer if we get a nice summer's day.
