Ali Paton

Ali Paton - Basketball player

Ali is an Scottish basketball international and is well known as 'Siren' on Gladiators. She grew up in Edinburgh and was a Brownie and a Queen's Guide.

"If you put your mind to something and work hard at it - anything is possible."

On being Scottish...

What is the one annual event in Scotland you always try to go to?

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival - as I love the vibe in the city during August and the variety of shows on offer.

What do you think Edinburgh has got to offer that makes it unique to most other cities?

In my opinion Edinburgh has everything. A castle, museums, a fantastic festival, historic architecture and cutting edge design. From the restaurants and bars to the sporting events and New Year party we host, it's a wonderful place to live.

Career…

How does a girl from Portobello discover basketball?

I started playing basketball at primary school aged 10 with my teacher Mrs Bayne. I was terrible and it took me several years to realise that I was meant to score as well as play defense, but I stuck at it.

It's one of the best things I have done for the past 24 years of my life! - Both in terms of the places in the world I have visited and the people I have met.

Describe what the experience of playing a game of basketball?

Playing basketball for me ticks all the boxes as it acts as an outlet for my competitive nature, my enjoyment at being part of a team, my love of success, my desire to be fit, and my need to sweat on a weekly basis!

What is your proudest achievement so far?

Playing for Scotland.

Who was your favourite Gladiator? What did you enjoy the most about the programme?

My "best pal" was Vogue. She married one of the contenders and they have just had a baby in September so I am over the moon for them. I loved the whole excitement of the programme and the thrill you got winning the games.

What is your absolute dream job and which has been the most interesting you have had so far?

My dream job was when I fronted a basketball programme for the now defunct channel ITV Sport. We spent the season traveling round the country covering the BBL (British Basketball League). Being a Gladiator was a very cool job too!

Guiding…

What interest badge do you remember getting and what did you have to do?

My Entertainers Badge when my friend Gillian Neave and I choreographed a concert complete with costumes and lots of terrible 80's pop song singing! Had we filmed it, it would have been a dead cert for the Pop Idol hall of shame!

Being a woman…

What values and qualities have you got from the women in your family?

The list is endless, but I guess the key values would be honesty and loyalty. I think my Mum who I admire greatly, has somehow instilled in me the belief that if you put your mind to something and work hard at it anything is possible.

What's important to her...

What one thing do you always have in your fridge?

Mineral water and Champagne - it's important to keep fluid levels up!

If you could introduce one compulsory thing into schools across Scotland - what would it be?

Daily exercise, as I am horrified at the inactivity and fitness levels of Scottish kids.
