Sarah O'Flaherty

Sarah O'Flaherty - TV and Radio Presenter

Sarah is a TV presenter for STV's Scotsport and also a presenter for Radio Clyde. She works in Glasgow and was a Guide.

"Be enthusiastic and do whatever you do to the very best of your ability. It's the little steps that take you to your dream."

On being Scottish...

How would you describe Scotland in five words?

Welcoming…Humorous….Rain…Talent….Football

Career…

Have you ever met any of your heros?

I was in holiday in South Africa and went back to a jewellery shop owned by an Irish family. Nelson Mandela was there, so I had the chance to meet him. I was completely blown away - he is such a lovely and inspirational person.

What has been the most exciting or memorable presenting job you have done so far?

In 2003 I went with Radio Clyde to Seville to see Celtic play Porto in the European Cup Final - which they hadn't done for 33 years. So there I was with 80,000 Celtic fans. Though they didn't win it was an incredibly amazing experience and I was delighted to have that opportunity.

What would your still love to do?

I'd like to cover the Ryder Cup, that would be really interesting.

Guiding…

Did Guiding teach you any values that are still valuable to you today?

How to be a good team player, listen to and help others. It was an opportunity to find out about other people and how with them. It put me in good stead for the work place where all those things are important.

Being a woman…

Which woman did you look up to when you were younger?

I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for my mother. The patience and energy she put into our family (me and my three brothers).
Its only looking back that I realise what a tough job she had keeping a family of six together - giving advice and teaching us values and morals.
She is still my inspirational and my best friend.

What do you wish you had known when you were younger that you know now?

I think I've learned that not one of us is perfect and when you accept that about other people and yourself then you aren't so judgemental.

If you had to choose a song that represents you or your attitude to life - what would it be?

Life is a Rollercoaster by Ronan Keating. Life is a like a rollercoaster - there are good times and bad - you just have to ride it and do your best whatever experiences come along. Learning and loving - that's what's important

What advice would you give to young girls who want to become presenters?

Firstly - follow your dreams and believe in yourself. Understand though that it's the little steps that take you to your dream. On a practical level try and get as much work experience as possible.

Submit your writing to magazines and papers - you never know. Also - and this is vital - take the direction and advice that is offered to you by those.

Also whatever you do in life - whether its at school, at work, always be enthusiastic and do whatever you do to the very best of your ability - however small or unimportant the task may seem to be.

Finally treat everyone well on your way up as they might be the people you meet on the way down!

What's important to her...

If you won a million pounds to give to a charity or non-profit organisation - which one would it be?

It would be divided into two - UNICEF because children are our future and we often forget how lucky we are to be able to sleep, drink and eat when we want.

If you could get free golf lessons from anyone in the world - who would you choose?

Jack Nicklaus - somewhere in Florida would be great.

If you were deserted on a desert island and only allowed three tracks - which ones would they be?

Elton John - Looking for Love
James Blunt - Beautiful
Andrea Bocelli - anything from him

If you had to live anywhere in the world where would it be?

In Ireland because it's a beautiful place and that's where my family are.

When was the last time you couldn't stop laughing?

Last weekend with my brother (Timothy O'Flaherty) who's a Stand Up Comedian who was reminding me of "make do days" - when my mother would just cook meals from whatever was left in the kitchen.
