" When you work with talented people it inspires you and makes you raise your game."

On being Scottish...

Do you have a favourite Scottish poet?

I love Liz Lochead – who is a wonderful poet. There is a great wit to her writing.

Which Scottish actor and actress do you have a great deal of admiration and respect for?

Robert Carlise – who is a versatile actor and Stella Gonnet who is a really good actress.

Career…

Who has been the greatest influence on your career?

Most of the other actors I have worked with. When you work with talented people it inspires you and makes you raise your game.

Which has been the most challenging role you have done?

I played Miss Julie in the play of the same name by August Strindberg. Julie is an aristocratic young woman who has an intense and brief affair with her father's valet, but they soon realize that they have nothing in common and she increasingly becomes more suicidal as the play develops.

Playing a complex character that goes through that range of emotions in the space of an evening is pretty challenging!

What two roles would you still love to do?

I’d love to do Shakespeare’s Lady MacBeth – because it would be a huge challenge. Also Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire, I love Tenesse Williams.

Being a woman…

What advice would you give to young women interested in acting professionally?

Read plays, see plays, watch films and get as much experience as possible.

What's important to her...

If you were at a formal dinner party – which is the one subject, that you would have to express your beliefs about regardless of who disagreed with you?

Racism – it would infuriate me and I would not keep quiet.

If you won a million pounds for a charity of your choice – what would it be?

Oxfam because they help the poor in the world irrespective of religion and race.

If the 12 year old you could meet you today –what would she have thought about what you have done with your life?

I hope she would be pleased that I followed my dreams.
