Gill Mills

Gill Mills - Presenter and Writer

Gill worked as a radio and TV presenter and now runs her own music broadcasting company. A Brownie & Queen's Guide, she made Glasgow home for years.

"A best friend listens even though they've heard your complaint a million times and never competes with you."

On being Scottish...

If you could take a visitor to three places in Scotland only - where would you go?

Shetland or Orkney - amazing everything there - people, food, places and pubs.

Glasgow - venue crawl - taking in all the best music venues and bands. Start at nice and sleazy on Sauchiehall St and end up at mono eating their fine veggie food.

Fife - vastly underrated. Love Crail and Anstruther and the like.

Who is your favourite Scottish band?

Right now, probably Sons and Daughters.

What/who is the best thing to come out of Scotland?

I pine for Haggis, it's not the same in England.

Career…

What is your greatest ambition?

To manage a balanced personal life with a full and creative professional one. Not managed it yet, one always suffers.

What would you like to be doing in five years time?

My mate Steve Lamacq's jobs, but in a lady way!!

If you could repeat one day of your professional life again - what would it be?

My last day presenting T in the Park on TV and radio was a pretty groovy one. Emotional, challenging and above all, fun.

Which band would you most like to interview?

There's a few I'd happily not interview again!

Guiding…

What was your uniform like?

Wicked. I 'customised' it. I liked the sort of military style shirts, very this season! I also asked for a new patrol name. To this date I think we were the only canary patrol in the north west.

Do you think it is a good thing that Guiding is still just for girls? If so - why do you think this environment can be of benefit to young girls?

I loved it just being girls. Boys are different, and when in a group of girls they still get competitive, which usually results in us ladies getting pushed out. Remove them and we all get a chance to try our hand in a more relaxed environment.

What was your greatest challenge in Guiding and what did you get out of doing it?

Going for and getting my Queen's Guide Award and Baden Powell Challenge Award. I was in the Guides when they were changing over the awards and thought it would be fun to try and get both. It was, but a lot of hard yet rewarding work.

Being a woman…

Define a good female friend.

One who doesn't nick your boyfriends, who listens even though they've heard you complain about something a million times before and who never competes with you. Oh - and the ability to make me laugh at the silliest things, even when you're meant to be being 'mature'.

What is the best thing about being a woman?

Not being a man! And the wide variety of shoes available, I feel for men and their poor shopping opportunities.

What's important to her...

If you won a million pounds for a charity of your choice - what would it be?

Cancer Research. Everyone gets touched by it in some way or another through their life.

Which is your favourite festival?

Bestival on the Isle of White. But Benicassim in Spain comes a close second.

What did you think you wanted to do when you grew up?

A film director, actress or radio DJ.

What are the top three albums in your collection?

Almost impossible to answer, so I'll go for current ones. Clap your hands say yeah!, Supergrass and King Creosote, but I could go on, er.Clor, still Mylo, Bloc Party remix album, Pendulum, the Go Team, Electrelane and so on and so on..

What are you most passionate about?

Positives: Music. People. Books. Food. Film.
Negatives: George Bush. Bad Manners. bullies.
