Andrea McLean

Andrea McLean - TV Weather Presenter

Andrea trained as a journalist and is now a weather presenter on GMTV. Andrea's family come from Glasgow.

"I love the variety of my job; it may be tiring, but it's never, ever boring!"

On being Scottish...

If you could spend an unlimited amount of money in any shop in Scotland - what would you buy?

Anywhere that sells Scottish Tablet - I love it!

What place in Scotland do you like to take your son to?

I take my son Finlay to Scotland a few times a year to meet his wee cousins and his Aunties and Uncles. We go to Stirling, which is a beautiful city, and also to the tiny village of Fenwick, in the West of Scotland.

I love going back to Scotland to see my family; everyone is so friendly and chatty, the countryside is breathtaking and I can really let my hair down when I'm with 'the clan'!

Career…

Which programme have you had the most fun presenting on?

GMTV; I've been there for over eight years, and in that time I've interviewed people from all walks of life, I've travelled the world, and I've even managed to take part in a west end play! OK, it was a very small part, and I didn't do it particularly well, but I did it!

What are you most proud of achieving?

In October 2004 I went to South Africa to present a week of live broadcasts from the small town of Mamone. GMTV helped a teenage girl called Mathapelo and her school, by providing them with a well so they could have clean drinking water, bicycles, and two new classrooms with books and computers.

It was the longest, hardest week of my life, and I loved every minute of it. I was very emotional at the end of the week, as were the whole team; we were so proud that we had done something to help this amazing young girl.

What would be your dream job?

I would love to present a lifestyle programme; interviewing stars, doing makeovers, and making people feel better about themselves! Or a live Saturday evening show; I love the buzz of live television, and that way I wouldn't have to get up at 4am!

What part of your job do you most enjoy?

The variety; it may be tiring, but it's never, ever boring!

What unique experience does writing give you?

I lose myself in writing. I look forward to sitting down at the computer in the same way that I love sitting down to read a good book; I know where I want the character to go, I'm just not exactly sure what adventures she will go on to get there!

What's important to her...

Describe your personality in the form of a weather report.

I am sunny and bright, with occasional cloudy spells…!

You obviously have a great love for Africa - do you have a favourite African country?

For a long time my favourite place in Africa was Kenya, and I visited the country many times… but now it has been replaced by South Africa.

Both countries are complex, they are not all they seem, and they both have a chequered past and an uncertain future, but there is such hope in South Africa, and such beauty, that you can't help but love it. It's got everything; beautiful rugged coastline, breathtaking wildlife and wide African skies. But it also has an edge to it; it's not a Disney-type experience where everything is lovely and there is always a happy ever after, and you do have to be careful. But I love it.

If you could only travel to two countries again in your lifetime - one to backpack around and one to visit in luxury - which ones would they be?

I have done both: I spent a year backpacking around the world in my twenties, and I have also travelled in style. I have to say that having done both, I like luxury better!

I would like to visit The Maldives; I've never been before and it looks amazing. That would definitely been done in luxury! And I would like to backpack in somewhere like Nepal; it looks so unusual and unlike anywhere I have ever been, that I would like to see it close up, and not just through a four-star window. Although, I'd book a week on a resort to recover!
