Lulu

Lulu OBE - Singer

Lulu is a singer & TV personality and was awarded the OBE in 2000 for her contribution to the Entertainment Industry. She was a Brownie in Glasgow.

"The bottom line is to do everything in moderation. It's also important to laugh at yourself."

On being Scottish...

Which Scot do you think is a good ambassador for Scotland?

Sean Connery - He has dignity, integrity, strength and character. He has been a great ambassador for Scotland.

Which is your favourite building in Glasgow and what is it that makes it special?

Renee Macintosh School of Art in Glasgow. He was a unique to Glasgow as Gaudi was to Barcelona. Of course, he is admired the world over.

Career…

Which song do you love performing?

There's never one reason for anything, there's never one answer for everything. For me there isn't one song so I'm going to choose a couple.
Shout, I Don't Wanna Fight and Where the Poor Boy's Dance.

Your most recent album A Little Soul in your Heart is a tribute to the old soul classics. If you could pick any soul singers to do a duet with - who would they be?

Aretha Franklin, Prince, Sam Cooke and Andre 3000.

You have worked with many talented people over the years - who have you particularly enjoyed working with?

I love Elton for everything that he is.
Michael McDonald is a brilliant singer. His technique never overshadows his amazing soul.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Again there are several. Being successful in the 60's. Starting out at the same time as the Beatles and the Stones and being acknowledged by them.

Having an American Number 1 when I was just 17. Getting a songwriting Grammy nomination for the Tina Turner song, I Don't Wanna Fight. Everyone keeps telling me I should be proud of being the only British woman to have hits in every decade.

I suppose I should be quite pleased with myself really. I know my mum would be proud.

Being a woman…

Which woman in your industry do you have a great deal of respect and admiration for?

Carol King - she is a brilliant songwriter and her songs are timeless. They are as fresh today as when I first heard them and she has taught herself to sing. She doesn't instantly have a great voice but it always conveys the heart and soul that comes through in her songs.

What are the most important things a woman should try to incorporate into her lifestyle to be healthy?

This is a difficult question to answer but off the top of my head I would say lifestyle, optimistic attitude, philosophy and health. The bottom line is to do everything in moderation. It's also important to laugh at yourself.

What's important to her...

If you could read anyone's diary who would it be?

Very good question - tough one.....
Maria Callas - The diva of divas
John Lennon - I loved him so.
So many people say so many things about these two artists but I would have loved to know what was really going on in their heads.
