Sinead Kerr

Sinead Kerr - Ice Dancer

Sinead and her brother John are the current British Ice Dance Champions and come from Dundee.

"Don't be put off if it feels like it's taking a while to improve! ….It's a lot of hard work to get to the top in any sport."

On being Scottish...

Has your Scottish roots inspired your routines in any way?

For this year's free dance we have chosen to skate to modern Scottish music, as we feel very proud of our roots and want to promote a vision of Scotland which is vibrant, energetic and funky! I think there's fieriness in the Scots which definitely comes across with our routines on the ice.

What do you miss the most when you are away from Scotland?

I miss my mum's home cooking and would find it hard to find a nicer city than Edinburgh.

Being a woman…

What is the best advice you can give to young female skaters who would like to follow in your footsteps?

Don't be put off if it feels like it's taking a while to improve! I was a very slow developer and never the "top of the class".

It's a lot of hard work to get to the top in any sport, but the feeling of skating a routine you have had a part in choreographing, to music of your choice, in front of 10,000 people and receiving applause or a standing ovation for it is something that's difficult to beat!

Career…

If you could be remembered for one routine you have done in a competition - which one would be?

At our first year in European Championships - 2003, we skated our free dance to music from the soundtrack "Matrix" with a routine we had choreographed ourselves. The combination of the cool music, biker style outfits and "different" choreography, compared to a lot of classical style programmes, stood out from the crowd.

What is the a) best thing and b) worst thing about what you do?

The best thing is the variety of different people you come across - not just skaters but people in the Arts and sport (skating transcends both!) who share some of the same thoughts and ideas as you. The worst thing is definitely Murrayfield ice rink in the winter - cold!!

What are you most proud of achieving so far?

I'm most proud of achieving the Olympic qualification as set down by the British Olympic Association (top 12 placing in World championships), as the Olympics is something I've always dreamt of.

What will be the ultimate achievement for you and John?

The ultimate achievement for us would be an Olympic medal at the 2010 games.

Who has been the greatest support to you in your sporting careers?

Without a doubt, our parents. They have given all their support throughout our careers without being pushy and done everything they could for us. We would absolutely not have achieved everything we have so far without them.

How do you and John keep your behaviour professional towards each other when you are practicing?

On the ice, we don't see each other as brother and sister. Just two people who work together. We have our moments of course, like any working partnership, but know that arguments waste a lot of time.

What's important to her...

If you could pick any famous (non-skater) male in the world do a routine with - who would it be and which song would you pick?

Having just watched Franz Ferdinand in concert, it would have to be their lead singer Alex Kapranos and U2's With or Without You would be a great track to skate to! What a weird thought!!
