Lorraine Kelly

Lorraine Kelly - Presenter

Lorraine is a popular TV presenter on GMT and a columnist. In 2004 she became the first female rector of Dundee University. Lorraine was born in Glasgow and was once a Brownie.

“Women should be true to themselves.”

On being Scottish...

If you could go back in time and re-live a few days of a memorable time in Scotland – when would it be and with whom?

My husband Steve and I had a wonderful time in Orkney when Rosie was a baby. The weather was incredibly sunny and we did a lot of island hopping. Orkney is so beautiful. We saw lots of puffins and seals and went for long walks on the beach and ate seafood. It was heaven.

What is the best thing about being Scottish?

I think we have a good sense of identity and we never really get above ourselves. Scots are warm and friendly but don't suffer fools gladly

If you could have witnessed a moment in Scottish history, interviewing one person from that incident, what and who would it be, what would you want to find out?

Oh tough question! I think it would have to be Sir Alexander Fleming who discovered penicillin. Was it an accident? How did it come about? I would love to tell him just what his amazing invention has done for the world and how many lives he has saved!

Career…

You've won a lot of awards and topped many polls – which is the one you have been most professionally proud of?

I just won the Royal Television Society Award for Best Presenter and I was very flattered as it was judged by people in the TV industry.

What's the most fun you have had on any TV programme?

I always have fun on GMTV and I especially enjoy our fashion items with Mark Heyes who always makes me laugh.

If you could pick three - a) the hardest b) most interesting c) most surprisingly likeable person you have interviewed – who would it be?

Hardest was Maria Carey because she was a little out of it and I think was suffering from jet lag.

Most interesting was Sir Peter Ustinov as he was so bright and such a wonderful communicator and had so many stories to tell.

Most surprisingly likeable was probably Bette Midler who I thought would be a toughie and was a pussy cat and loves Scotland, We spent most of the interview with me telling her where to visit. She did end up going to Inverness on her holidays!

You have met and interviewed many health and beauty experts over the years – what are the most important things you have learned about looking your best?

Lots of sleep and drink lots of water. Being happy is worth more than any amount of expensive face cream!

What were your daughter's favourite dishes when she was younger from your book the “Baby and Toddler Eating Plan”. Does she naturally choose healthy foods now she is older?

She loved tuna pasta and still does. She eats quite well and enjoys fruit but is not keen on veg.

What would you still like to achieve?

I want to visit the South Pole and I would love to write a novel.

Guiding…

Which one of the three "Essentials of Guiding" do you think is absolutely crucial quality for girls and young women today to have and why?

I think all of them but if pushed then socially – because we all have to learn to respect each other and to get on with each other.

Being a woman…

What is the most important lesson a woman can learn in life?

Tolerance and patience.

What do you think all women should do for themselves?

To help other people and to always be true to themselves.

Which female has had the most positive impact on your life?

My Mum. I have learned just about everything from her and no one has a bad word to say about her. Her most overused phrase is “If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all”. I think that is a good way to live your life.

If you could have a dinner party with five women who have ever lived – who would they be?

Queen Elizabeth the first – the ultimate woman in a man's world; Former Israeli PM Golda Meir (likewise) Bette Davis for the movie gossip; Hilary Clinton to find out what really went on in the White House and Whoopee Goldberg to make us laugh.

What's important to her...

If you had a million pounds to give to a charity which one would it be?

I would give it to MS because my sister in law suffers from this cruel disease and we need to find a cure.

You have a reputation for being easy going and cheerful…but what really gets you angry?

Intolerance bullying and bigotry make me seethe!

What's your favourite comfort meal?

Beans on toast!
