Kate Heavenor

Kate Heavenor - Presenter

Kate presented the Eureka pop science show & moved on to the Disney Channel. Born in Glasgow, she was a Brownie.

"Sometimes it's easy to chase rainbows so much you forget that what makes you happy is under your nose."

On being Scottish...

What makes you most proud to be a Scot?

That we had a very distinct culture. I was in Kilmelfort for New Year at my parent's holiday cottage. We saw in the New Year in the village hall. There is a big ceilidh there every year and it feels very unifying to have something like the dances that everyone knows and just gets up does.

What's your favourite Scottish food?

This sounds funny but it's Glaswegian fish and chips! The first thing I do when I arrive home is get a fish and chip supper! It doesn't taste the same in London- It's rubbish! They don't use Haddock and I am very fussy about the vinegar I like I only like non- brewed condiment.

You've got one day in Scotland with a limitless budget and personal jet - what would you do?

I'd grab Jean, fly to Edinburgh to get Kelda, stop off in Giffnock for Gillian, and got via Glasgow to get Claire (who is soon to be my sister in law) and I would go to Turnberry with them…. Not for the golf obviously!

They have the most amazing spa there. I took my mum for the day when she got a first in her degree. It is total heaven!

Girl paradise! We had three hours of treatments and then gossiped on the lounges for the rest of the day!

Career…

How did you get to work in the media?

I did Television and Young People a Course at the Edinburgh Festival. It was excellent. It comes every year.

Which programme have you most enjoyed working on?

So difficult to choose! I love live shows because it's so exhilarating.

You have been in quite a few pantos - what do you enjoy most about being in them?

Sunderland Empire Playing Cinderella was the best fun I ever had! It was with Darren Day (no need to raise an eyebrow!) and Sid Little. Not only was the show wonderful the cast got on really well. Sid little played electric guitar in the pub one night! Classic!

The one thing I have never done is Panto in Scotland… I would love to fulfill that ambition because I love the Panto humour in Scotland.

Would you like to do more kinds of acting roles?

I'd love to! I started off at RSAMD so had a taste for it but I had to leave when I got permanent presenting work. I'd love to play Elisa in My Fair Lady because the two accents would be such a challenge and the songs suit my voice…But Janet In Rocky Horror could also be fun!

In terms of TV Rose in DR WHO would be wicked…I think Billy Piper plays it very well.

What would you like to be doing in five years time?

Hosting a show that really suits my personality.

Guiding…

What was the most fun you had in Brownies?

I used to be in the Gang Shows in the Kings Theatre. We had to rehearse really hard- and not only did I make some great friends I also had to overcome a massive fear: dancing in public..I am really clumsy usually! Plus there was the added interest of good-looking Scouts in the show….

Being a woman…

What is the most important value or approach to have in life?

I think it's important to have goals and ambitions. I also think it's equally important remember to be grateful for what you have when you have it. Sometimes it's easy to chase rainbows so much you forget that what makes you happy is under your nose.

What did you worry about when you were younger that you wish you hadn't now?

I think it can take a while for you to feel comfortable in your own skin. 13-17 is such a horrible age..You worry because your friends are taller and you are not or that you have bigger hips than your pal.

I wish I hadn't worried about my figure so much… now when I look a photos of me on the beach when I was 16 I can't believe I was ever stressed out!

So enjoy it while you can- a bikini will never look as good on you again!

What's important to her...

If you had to go on any of the celebrity reality TV programmes - which one would it be?

Hells Kitchen - because I love cooking and I recon I would be quite good at it. I could never do Strictly Come Dancing because I have no grace… not even in the kitchen when I making supper and my boyfriend thinks it's funny to hurl me round the kitchen!

What was the greatest challenge you have overcome and how did you do it?

Passing my Highers. I was diagnosed with dyslexia when I was about 8 and really struggled with reading and writing until I was 11.

Then I moved school and had a wonderful, inspirational teacher, Sheila Anderson. She saw me twice a week up until I was 17 and even when I didn't need her support so much she was still always there for me to look over an essay or even just to listen to me having a wee moan.

She also taught me to stop raising my eyebrows to teachers as it always got me into trouble because they thought I had an attitude! So my overcoming it was really vastly attributed to her and the self-esteem she helped me build.

What piece of clothing would you never give away?

Alice Temperley I bought a dress from her winter collection- it was my Xmas present from Mum, Dad, marry, Kenny, Gran and my brother Mark- it is absolutely beautiful. She cuts for woman like me- big hips! I actually decided to look at her stuff because Kate Winslet wears lots of her clothes and she has a similar body shape.

So I'll never give that dress away because I feel like a million dollars in it!
