Donna Kennedy

Donna Kennedy - Rugby Player

She is Scotland's most capped rugby player. Brought up in Carnwath, South Lanarkshire, she was a Brownie & Guide.

"The desire I have to play for my country keeps me very focused and motivated, and my team mates."

Career…

What is your greatest achievement?

World record holder of highest capped women's player, and most capped player for Scottish rugby.

What are your top three tips on improving your game?

Always learning, improve on skills and also take on any advice, always be a student of the game.

Describe for those who have never played - what a rugby player experiences during a rugby game.

Rugby demands every emotion going, throughout the game you are constantly challenged with decision making skills, aggression levels go up and down, and mental toughness is always challenged.

To play in a blue jersey is everything but to win takes 22 in the team and that's an awesome experience of playing a team sport.

Which rugby game will you tell your grand-children about?

Scotland v England at Stewarts Mellive's ground we beat England 5 - 8 to win the 1998 grand slam.

Who has had the most positive impact on your rugby career?

There has been several people, but to be honest its been myself, and what I mean by that is having the want and desire to keep improving and make the relevant changes that suits the game. The desire I have to play for my country keeps me very focused and motivated, and my team mates.

What do you still want to do?

I want to travel, go to Australia and NZ, and maybe become an international referee!

Being a woman…

Which female sportsperson do you most admire?

Kelly Holmes, she has battled with so many injuries and still achieved 2 Gold Medals. She never gives up.

What advice would you give to young women who would be interested in trying rugby?

Go to a very well established club with current international player there. Go and enjoy, rugby is a massive part of my life and I have made some very good life long friends.

What's important to her...

What would you call your autobiography?

"Not just a boy's game!"
Why would I call it that - because it's not!

If you had a million pounds to give to a charity or a NPO of your choice which one would it be?

I would not give it all to one charity, would split it between breast cancer charity, AIDS research charity, child abuse charity and African poverty charity. Because these are the ones that I feel are most threatening to everyday life that we all take for granted!

Create a "fantasy" game with the best rugby players in the world, your top 5?

Gill burns (England no 8)
Paula Chalmers (Scotland no 9)
Anna Richards (Nz no10)
Zin Zan Brook (Nz no 8)
Andy Irvine (Scotland no15)
