Lorna Brooks

Lorna Brooks - Singer/Songwriter

Lorna is one of Scotland's most talented singer songwriters. Lorna was born in Glasgow where she was a Guide and a Brownie.

"Most things in life are a team effort - if you get on with others then you should get on ok in life."

On being Scottish...

Which city in Scotland do you think has the most to offer in the Arts?

Tricky one because I think that most cities in Scotland offer a lot in the arts but this may be varied.

Glasgow is best for live music, Edinburgh has the international and fringe festival, Dundee has Dundee rep theatre and contemporary arts centre, Aberdeen The Lemon Tree for theatre and music and Inverness - Eden Court for theatre and music and I am sure much, much more can be found all over.

What would be your dream location to do a gig?

Probably Hampden or Murrayfield but this is a total fantasy!!

Career…

Did you ever nearly give up and what did you tell yourself to keep going?

Yes it is a constant battle - then the tide changes and another song or gig comes along and I go on another path of love and enjoyment of music.

Which song was the hardest for you to write?

One More Time - sadly I lost my father and I knew I would want to write a song about him or the loss of him - eventually three years later I did.

Which review have you got that meant the most to you?

It's one I got quite a few years ago but it made me very proud: "Lorna Brooks has the kind of voice you would like to spend the rest of your life with…" Record Mirror.

Guiding...

What values did you learn in Guiding that remains useful to you today?

That generally most things in life are a team effort - if you get on with others then you should get on ok in life.

What changes to Guiding are you pleased have been made since you were in?

The uniform!

Which was the interest badge you were most proud of getting?

I'm afraid I don't remember but I do remember as a Brownie having both arms full of badges!

Being a woman…

What advice would you give to any young women who really want to follow a career in music?

As is any career in the arts its hard work, you are away from home a lot and its very much a man's world - but don't be put off, put in the practice, play with as many musicians as possible, don't ever stop learning, listen to as many different styles and most of all enjoy it cause it is great fun.

What values did you learn in Guiding that remains useful to you today?

That generally most things in life are a team effort - if you get on with others then you should get on ok in life.

Which female singer do you think has the most incredible voice?

Ella Fitzgerald.

What's important to her...

If you could do a gig with anyone in the world who would it be?

There's a few - Sting, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone and Bonnie Raitt - because they have influenced me so much.

If you had time to go to an evening class and learn something completely new - what would it be?

Probably a language as I feel so ignorant when abroad as I can only speak English.
