Theresa Breslin

Theresa Breslin - Author

Theresa is a former librarian and a prize winning author brought up in Kirkintilloch and now lives in Lenzie, Dunbartonshire.

"Be true to yourself."

On being Scottish...

What is your favourite building in Scotland?

Stirling Castle because of its history, and the fantastic view of the castle you can see from outside Stirling. The view from the castle is also magnificent!

In what way do you think Scotland is still firmly rooted in its Celtic heritage?

I think that Scotland is still firmly rooted in its Celtic heritage very much through stories and storytelling.

Career…

Are your characters based on real people and real situations?

My characters are partly based on real people. Divided City is based on friendship in the face of prejudice. Simon's Challenge is based on the closure of a steelworks.

How important are the illustrations to you that accompany your books?

Illustrations are very important in my books. The Dream Master series is enhanced enormously by the illustrations.

You have won a great deal of awards and prizes - which one means the most?

The Carnegie Medal means the most to me as it is reckoned to be the most prestigious award in Children's Literature.

How would you summarise your writing in five words?

Better to ask my readers!

What was the best thing one of you readers said about a book?

One reader said that when he read Whispers in the Graveyard he thought that I was inside his head.

Guiding...

What do you think the benefits are to young people who are in organisations like Guiding?

The benefits to young people by such organisations like Guiding are companionship, information, and opportunities to extend your horizons. They also give a sense of self worth, a sense of adventure and an outstanding variety of experiences.

What impresses you most about Guiding today and what they offer the girls?

Definitely the huge variety of experiences that Guiding gives to the girls!

Being a woman…

What would you say to girls and young women who believe they don't enjoy reading?

I would have to say that they need to find the right book! There is such a choice and there will be something to attract everyone.

What is the best piece of advice you were given by a woman?

Be true to yourself.

What's important to her...

What are your passions/interests?

I am a fanatical reader. I also like walking, travelling or visiting old castles and graveyards!

If you had a month with no commitments and an unlimited budget - what would you do?

Sail a boat on the South China Sea.

If you could live the life of a character in a book you loved as a child - who would it be?

Jo in Little Women.
