Elish Angiolini - Solicitor General
Elish became the first female non-Advocate Solicitor General for Scotland. Elish was brought up in Govan, Glasgow where she was a Brownie." First and foremost be yourself. Women will face new challenges and pressures as the opportunities available grow. "
Tony Roper's The Steamie . I used to live round the corner from a steamie and visited with my mother from time to time. The play brings to life some images of warmth and humour deeply packed away in my memory of the early 1960's.
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark.
All of Peter Howson's work. His paintings are always challenging and at times, brutal, but he has a spectacular talent.
Extraordinarily difficult to choose. Last year I bought Eddie Reader's compilation of Burn's songs on CD. Her version of Ae Fond Kiss is spine tingling stuff!
The integrity and professionalism of those who make up its various parts – defence lawyers, judges, clerks and prosecutors. Without good, able and honest people any system can be corrupted.
Travelling north on a Summer's evening with Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument to the east and the carse stretching out to the hills to the west and north is quite astounding. It is our great threshold for the delights which lie beyond.
Being a lawyer seemed to be about problem solving and I liked the idea of being resourceful enough to be able to do that. I have had a fascinating and rewarding career which has far exceeded my expectations.
Yes - don't knit (I didn't get the Knitting Badge) !! More seriously, be resourceful.
What do you wish you hadn't worried about when you were younger?
Everything! Worrying too much is a very damaging and negative activity. It drains you of the resources and confidence. You need to get out and influence the things in life you worry about!
First and foremost be yourself. Women will face new challenges and pressures as the opportunities available grow. The trick is to make the right choices for you as an individual not as a woman.
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made:
Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honeybee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and day
I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.
My family. My health.
There are many careers I would have liked to have tried – management, teaching and medicine would be the top three.
A great deal but visiting Kashmir is a long held ambition.
