Wendy Alexander

Wendy Alexander - MSP

A member of the first Scottish Cabinet, Wendy is regarded as one of the most influential politicians in the country. Wendy was born in Glasgow and was a Brownie and Guide.

"The highlights of my job are having the chance to make a real difference."

On being Scottish...

In the last 100 years, what has had the most positive impact on Scotland?

The creation of the National Health Service - so the care you get when you are ill does not depend on how much money you or your family may have.

Career…

What are the highlights and lowlights of your job?

The highlights are having the chance to make a real difference. E.g. introducing the right for all old people to have a central heating system installed if they did not have one. The lowlights are being unable to fix an injustice that a constituent has suffered.

Guiding…

What values did you learn in Guiding that helped you in later life?

Teamwork - it is not always easy to get a Patrol to work together, know what they want to do and enjoy doing it together. Being Swallow Patrol Leader taught me a lot about life and how different we all are.

Being a woman…

What did you worry about when you were younger that you wish you hadn't now?

How I looked.

What's important to her...

Is there any thing that you have not yet tried that you would like to do?

Climb Ben Nevis.

What is your most treasured possession?

My husband Brian - but since people are not possessions - our cat!

What makes you smile?

Old friends, recalling good times.
