Baden-Powell Challenge Award - The Baden-Powell Challenge is the highest individual achievement a Guide can gain. To reward the Guide's achievements and celebrate her gaining this prestigious award, the Guide attends a Baden-Powell Adventure.

Brownies - Girls aged 7 - 10

Brown Owl – Guider in charge of a brownie Unit. Her assistants may be called Tawny or Snowy Owl.

Brownie Wings – Was a badge presented to a girl as she left Brownies to go to Guides.

Brownie Pack - Traditional name for Brownie Guide Unit.

Company - a name for a Guide Unit.

Essentials of Guiding -

  • Socially the girls learn about: making group decisions, working with and having consideration for others.
  • Intellectually, they are encouraged to learn new things, be creative, and learn to make informed choices and to be interested in how things work.
  • Spiritually and morally, through Guiding activities girls gain an appreciation of the natural world; learn to accept that everyone is different and to care for others.

First Class Badges - A second award after Second Class awarded to a Guide who gained specific proficiency badges and emblems and completed a set programme and test.

G File – A filofax of activities used by Guides as a sources of information and a record book.

Go For It! - It a varied range of programme and activities to suit all personalities and skills, used in the Guide age range. These topics are developing constantly and therefore fresh and topical.

Guides - girls aged 10-14.

Promise – All Guides throughout the world make a promise. Each county has a different promise to their God, county and the Guide Law. A girl is awarded a Promise Badge at her Promise Ceremony.

Patrol – A group of four to eight girls, who choose their own leader, who plan their activities and work together. A Guide Unit will be divided into patrols.

Queen’s Guide – Previously the highest award in the Guide section and is now achieved in the Senior Section.

Rangers - Senior Section groups 16-17+ years self governing and programming groups.

Second Class Badges – Previously the first major milestone award for gaining Proficiency Badges and a set test.

Seconder – Assistant to the Patrol Leader.

Units – Term used for any section group for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides etc.

Young Leader - A member of any Senior Section (aged 14-26) who assists Guiders in the Unit.

Surprise Yourself - Girlguiding strapline that demonstrates the surprises Guiding can bring to individuals and communities.
