Guiding through Time, publication

Girlguiding Scotland joins the Edinburgh Fringe Festival!

As part of the Edinburgh Fringe this year, the Marketing and Communications staff and volunteer team held an exhibition at Scottish Headquarters of Brownie and Guide uniforms.

'Guiding Through Time' exhibitionVisitors entering the foyer at SHQ were met with fourteen modern, white mannequins displaying uniforms from 1909 to the present day. Each uniform was named after one of the most popular names at the time such as Betty (1930s) or Ruth (1920s). People were thrilled to see their uniforms, as well as their mother's and grandmother's.

Nearly 1000 visitors came to the exhibition, including members, ex-members supporters and the public. The exhibition was so popular that it was extended for an extra week.

A booklet accompanying the exhibition, which gave details of each uniform is now to be published, as virtually every visitor asked if they could buy one. The booklet will soon be available from Scottish trading, details of the launch is coming soon, so keep checking the website for more info.

Thanks must go to the Archives (CHQ, Edinburgh, Scotland), Marks and Spencer, (for loan of the mannequins), Standard Life (for printing the original booklets) and all the members from local Counties who staffed the exhibition.

At one of the receptions held for members and supporters, the Scottish Chief Commissioner Liz Pitcairn, said, "What a thrill to see how Girlguiding has evolved throughout the years to suit the ever changing needs of the girls."

Excepts from the visitors book:

Fantastic - thank you for making us so welcome. Please, please publish the book with the uniforms; it would be great for Tradition badges.
Jenny, Guider from Cheshire

As a non-Guider, I was very impressed with such a professionally put together exhibition. A wonderful, detailed booklet.
Caitlin from Dumfries

Saw my Mum's and my Grandma's uniform. It was good.
