About Us

Dunbartonshire RainbowsHere in Dunbartonshire we are very proud of our Guiding heritage. The first Royal Patroness of Girl Guides was H.R.H. Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll and daughter of Queen Victoria. In 1920, Princess Louise, who had a home at Rosneath Castle in Dunbartonshire, expressed a desire that the Guide County should be called "Princess Louise's Own" and the County has been proud to bear this Royal Accolade ever since. As far as we know, this makes us the only County who are permitted to use a Royal Cipher on our County banner and badges.

Dunbartonshire

By becoming a member of Girlguiding Dunbartonshire you are be following in some very special footsteps… In fact, one of our most famous members was "Texas" singer, Sharleen Spitteri, who was a Brownie right here in Balloch!

We take our fun just as seriously as we take our Guiding, and you may well find us caught up in all sorts of fabulous activities from flying light aircraft to presenting our own talent shows and raising money for charity.

We have our own outdoor facility at Catterburn with a campsite, newly refurbished Bothy and great indoor accommodation at the "Brownie House".

For those who want to roam that bit further afield, we also encourage international travel. In fact some of our Rangers from Balloch recently went on a trip to Canada!

Dunbartonshire is one of the largest Counties in Scotland, covering 4 local authorities and a very large geographic area from Kilsyth in the East to Helensburgh, Rosneath and Arrochar in the West.

We are looking for...

Bar chart showing waiting listsWe are always happy to welcome new faces, and will do our best to find you a place in the unit of your choice.

At the moment we are in great need of adult volunteers and appreciate all help: even if you cannot commit to becoming a leader, any time you could provide as a unit helper would be greatly appreciated.

Dunbartonshire LeadersIf you are unsure about volunteering, why not come along to your local unit for an evening? Young or old, parent, student, employed, whatever! The women involved in Girlguiding come from all walks of life, and I think you will be surprised by how much you enjoy it! The girls are fantastic and always keen - there is no better feeling than helping them to achieve their goals! Remember, no experience is required.

Thanks to a recent recruitment drive we have been able to open up 3 new guide units, however, we still have so many girls on waiting lists who could join today if we had more adult volunteers.

Quote from one of our members:
"If I hadn't become a Guider I would have missed out on so many opportunities; learning new skills, making loads of friends, travelling and outdoor activities, to name a few."
Margaret Hyde, Division Training Coordinator.

Ambassadors

Heather Suttie at the launch of our new campsite at CatterburnWe have many Ambassadors in Dunbartonshire, who give freely of their time for Girlguiding, including Brigadier Hardie, the Lord Lieutenant for our County and Heather Suttie, DJ with Beat 106.Our other Ambassadors include Jackie Baillie MSP, Depute provost Cathy McInnes and Anne Tomkins.

You don't have to be a prominent public figure to become an Ambassador for Guiding. Many people from our local communities who work tirelessly to help and represent Girlguiding have been made ambassadors as our way of recognising their hard work.
