CENTENARY

2010 Marks Girlguiding Scotland’s Centenary Year
Scottish Centenary Events and Activities
Only once in every 100 years can we celebrate a Girlguiding Centenary – and 2010 is our very first. We certainly have a lot to celebrate!
Ever since Baden Powell, the founder of the Scout Movement, was persuaded by his sister in 1910 to introduce a programme for girls and young women, named the Girl Guides, communities throughout Scotland have benefited from having their girl and adult volunteer members participating in activities that have helped them unleash their full potential.
Throughout our cities, towns and villages - spanning from Shetland & Orkney to the Western Isles to Dundee to Berwick - our girls and volunteers have enjoyed a programme of service and self-development. Our current membership of nearly 60,000 makes Girlguiding the largest voluntary organisation in Scotland.
So, our Centenary celebrations will span every community in the country, from 5 September 2009 to 20 October 2010. Our 3,000 units led by 10,000 volunteers will make this coming year unforgettable for our 50,000 girls, who enjoy Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section. We have 1,000s of events and activities planned - local, national and international.
Here are just a few of the Scottish highlights which, under the four themes of Adventure - Heritage - Creativity - Community Action, our girls and volunteers can indulge in - Parties, Treks, Dancing and Music, Shopping, Carnivals, Camping … even firing the One O’Clock Gun on New Year’s Day 2010:

Centenary Launch - Scottish Parliamentary Debate & Reception (O)
On Thursday 10th September Girlguiding Scotland launched its Centenary Celebrations at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh, where a Scottish Parliamentary Debate was held. Hosted by one of Girlguiding Scotland's most active Ambassadors, Jeremy Purvis MSP, this event was attended by parliamentarians from across all political parties.
Our celebrations kicked off with a Centenary procession of 100 of Girlguiding Scotland's girls down Edinburgh's Royal Mile. We started at 3pm from Mercat Cross and proceeded down the Royal Mile to the Parliament, where at 3.30pm our VIP guests cut our Centenary cake then cheered the girls from Edinburgh and Lothian as they performed our specially commissioned Centenary dance: A Hundred Thousand Welcomes.
