What Senior Section Do

Senior Section members on rope bridge

The Senior Section is for young women aged fourteen to twenty five. It is a flexible, fun programme open to young women from their 14th birthday until their 26th birthday. There are a number of ways you can be involved and the opportunities are immense, from international volunteering to improving your CV.

Senior Section members can undertake a wide range of awards and qualifications. These include the Leadership qualification, which helps them in running Guiding units for younger girls, the internationally-recognised Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, and other prestigious awards specific to Guiding.

Senior Section Programme

Look Wider

The Look Wider programme offers a range of activities and challenges and motivates members to try out new things - it could be learning a new language, playing a musical instrument, running a marathon, camping in the wilds or volunteering overseas. It is flexible and particapants can take their chosen activites as far as they wish, from taster level all the way to gaining a qualification that is recognised outside Guiding.

Look Wider is made up of eight different octants, each with three phases. The octants may be different, but you'll find that most of what you do as a Senior Section member will count towards Look Wider.

  • Creativity
  • Fit for life
  • Community action
  • Out of doors
  • International
  • Independent living
  • Personal values
  • Leadership

Octants can be completed in any order and you can do activities towards more than one octant at the same time. Each Octant is divided into three Phases, which can be completed in any order and done as an individual or part of a group:

Phase 1 gives you an opportunity to try three new activities. These can be completely new things or new elements of an existing skill or hobby.

Phase 2 allows you to take things further by doing an activity for a minimum of 12 hours. It can be something you got a taste of in Phase 1 or something entirely different.

Phase 3 is a long-term challenge that involves either doing a new or familiar activity for a minimum of 30 hours, gaining a qualification in the activity, or teaching it to other people.
