YOUNG WOMAN FROM EDINBURGH SPENDS EASTER IN LAPLAND IN CELEBRATION OF GIRLGUIDING UK’S CENTENARY One young woman from Edinburgh celebrated Girlguiding UK’s Centenary year during Easter by travelling north to Lapland to try her hand at a number of extreme snow-based activities. Amy Dewhurst, 19, from Edinburgh travelled to northern Finland for the event Ultimate Lapland; Breaking the Ice! along with 13 other Guiding members from right across the UK. They all had a go at a range of activities over the five-day trip. These included reindeer driving, a husky safari, cross-country skiing and ‘snow shoe’ races. There was even the chance to try out a traditional ‘sea dip’ in the frozen Gulf of Bothnia. On their last evening in Lapland, the group also got the once in a lifetime opportunity to sleep in a giant igloo. And despite it being early April, Amy and the rest of the group sheltered from temperatures well below freezing. On top of this, throughout the trip the girls travelled across the snow-covered terrain on board snowmobiles. The trip was just one of over a hundred adventurous activities open to Guiding’s 550,000 members throughout its anniversary. Other adventures include trips as far a field as the Falkland Islands, Botswana and Costa Rica. Amy said: “Spending five days in Lapland was just an amazing experience that I would repeat at any given opportunity.” “My favourite part was driving a husky sleigh as it was both a thrill and an adventure. I also loved the excitement and reward of experiencing things with a group of people I'd never met. I would definitely recommend a Girlguiding adventure trip to all."
