What is CashBack for Communities?

Girls with banner

The Scheme aims to provide accessible funding for local units, with user-friendly application and evaluation procedures. There are currently two types of grant available; a programme grant (maximum £2,000) to extend and improve existing unit activity, and a start up grant for new units (maximum £1,000). Programme grants should support a programme of activity (not a one off event) and start up grants are available to units for 6 months before and up to 6 months after the start date.

New Age Range

The age range for Applications has been lowered to age 8, Brownie units can now apply and receive the benefits of CashBack. However, this will only apply if most of the Brownies in the unit are aged 8 or over.

What is not Covered

Cashback grants are not available for:

  •  International trips and events (unless in very special circumstances)
  •  Activities were most of the girls are aged 7 or under
  •  Units who have already received a grant in the past year
  • Payment of Subscription or uniform costs

Success Stories

Girls Up a High Ropes Course

The awards included a start up grant for a new senior section Unit in Ross-shire for funding towards the cost of hall rent, travel and fees for camp activity and a programme grant to 201st City of Glasgow Guide Unit. This enabled the guides to have a programme of unit meetings based around themes of being health, active and enjoying the outdoors. The girls thoroughly enjoyed this programme, and reporting at the end of the project, their leader commented “It was great that the CashBack for Community scheme promoted the idea of a programme of events, and not just one 2 Girls with Archery Bowsbig event. Although we had a big event, the funding we received also enabled us to buy equipment such as a camera to use at the weekend away and also equipment for future events which could be linked back to that one big event - such as maps and compasses for a map reading night. Without the funding, some of the girls would have missed out on the trip and we wouldn’t have been able to buy sufficient maps and compasses to do a proper map night. The funding really did make a big difference. Thank You.”

The Future

We are very pleased that the Scottish Government have recognised the success of this Small Grants Scheme, and have increased the original allocation of funding for the financial year 2011/12.
